A Tribute to Shane McGowan at Hill Arts in Portland

Wow. What an event! I don’t think I’ll ever forget the magic that filled the hall! Alongside four incredibly talented musicians—Troy Bennett, Jim Brady, Travis Cote, and Toby McAllister—we came together to celebrate and honor one of the greatest influences in our lives: Shane MacGowan of The Pogues. His music, his storytelling, his spirit—Shane has been a beacon for so many of us, guiding our journey as musicians, and this tribute was nothing short of electric.

The crowd was packed in tight, raising pints and singing their hearts out as we played Shane’s iconic tunes. The energy was wild, and I could feel Shane’s presence in every chord, every lyric. To say I was moved would be an understatement. This man, this legend, shaped not just a genre, but an entire culture of music lovers who found solace, joy, and community in his songs.

Sharing that stage with such gifted lads felt like a dream. Each brought their own magic to the mix. And let me tell you, a few rounds of Powers’ whiskey definitely didn’t hurt to keep the spirit high!

But the real heroes of the night? The crowd. You all came out, and together, we celebrated not just a musician but a movement. Shane’s songs are anthems for the outcasts, the dreamers, and everyone who’s ever lived for the music. Thank you for singing with us, for laughing and shedding a few tears, and for making the night so incredibly special.

For those who couldn’t make it, don’t worry—this wasn’t the last time we’ll be paying tribute to Shane. His legacy will continue to live on, and we’ll be here to honor it.

Sláinte!

Ross
